Revolvers are an excellent fit for anyone just taking up shooting. People often ask whether handgun shooting should be started with a revolver or a pistol. There is no single right answer. A revolver is mechanically simpler than a pistol, which is why it may well be the best first gun of all for a complete novice. With only the trigger, the hammer, the cylinder release latch and the ejector to move, no very complex physical routine or body control is required.

A small-calibre revolver or pistol is the best way to start shooting. A small-calibre revolver teaches you the basics of shooting nicely, along with loading the gun and ejecting the cases. Raising the gun to shoot, the correct shooting stance, cocking, aiming, firing and follow-through are all easy to learn with a revolver. Those lessons carry over when you move on to a larger revolver or to a pistol. Cleaning the gun is easier to learn on a simple revolver too: there are far fewer moving parts to come off and go missing than on a pistol.
