Air Rifles
Shooting is a good sport to start with an air rifle or an air pistol. Once shooting air guns comes easily, it is simple to learn to shoot a shotgun and powder-burning firearms as well.
The pressure that fires an air gun can be produced in a few different ways. In a spring-powered air gun, the spring compressed on cocking generates pressure in the cylinder as the gun is fired. That mechanism produces relatively strong recoil, which can reduce accuracy as you shoot. Cocking the spring also takes a certain amount of force. The good sides of a spring-powered air gun are reliability and simplicity.
Spring-piston air guns are in practice no longer used in competition today. Modern air rifles usually take their power from replaceable carbon dioxide capsules or refillable compressed-air cylinders. Electronic triggers are also becoming steadily more common.
A pre-charged pneumatic air rifle, or PCP air rifle, delivers plenty of power for precision shooting with very little recoil. A pre-charged air gun needs a pump and adapter alongside it for filling.
CO2 air rifles, that is, carbon dioxide powered air rifles, allow fast successive shots. In that respect they are comparable to a semi-automatic gun.
Air rifles for competition, recreational shooting and shooting practice
Air rifles powered by gas pressure or compressed air are usually small-calibre competition and training guns. The power of an air rifle has a real bearing on what the gun is used for. For precision shooting, 4.5 mm calibre air rifles are the best fit. Larger 5.5 mm and 6.35 mm air guns suit long-range shooting better.

Please note that in Finland the most common air guns can be bought without a licence. The buyer must be over 18, however, and under-18s must use air guns under adult supervision. Powerful air guns above .25 calibre (over 6.35 mm, gas-powered) require registration and are subject to licence. The rules of safe gun handling must always be kept in mind when handling an air rifle.
