Air Pistols

Shooting is easy to take up with an air pistol. An air pistol offers the pleasure of shooting to the beginner and the experienced shooter alike. A quality air pistol also works well as a training gun for a competitive shooter.

Taking up air gun shooting calls for no special knowledge or skills. Once safe gun handling has been learned, you can move straight on to shooting. Air guns and air gun shooting are quite affordable compared with other shooting disciplines. Air pistols, like air rifles, are a good way to practise correct shooting technique. 

An air pistol is an almost recoilless handgun. Air pistols are powered by replaceable carbon dioxide capsules, by a gas piston cocked with a lever or a break barrel, or by a pump-filled compressed-air cylinder, just as air rifles are. Air pistols are typically .177 calibre (4.5 mm) and fitted with open sights.

Air pistols for precision shooting

Almost anyone can shoot an air pistol, and a temporary but safe air pistol range is easy to set up in a back garden, a garage or even a sports hall. Air pistols are nearly always quiet enough that no hearing protection is needed. The sport is easy to keep up whatever the season or the weather, and without disturbing your surroundings unnecessarily.

The most powerful air pistols are pneumatic CO2 air pistols. Their pellets leave the barrel at speeds of over 250 m/s. Alongside that power they also offer accuracy, which makes them particularly well suited to precision shooting. Air pistols are competed with over 10 metres, right up to Olympic level, but most often they are used for recreational and therapeutic shooting.

An air pistol is a licence-free gun, but buying one requires you to be 18 years old. When handling an air pistol it is worth keeping the rules of safe gun handling in mind.
