Night vision scopes make life easier for the hunter and the angler at dusk and in darkness, when visibility is poor because of the dark. A night vision scope or a thermal scope makes spotting your quarry considerably easier.
Night vision scopes have been permitted since 1 June 2019 for hunting raccoon dog, mink, muskrat, coypu and raccoon. These species have been designated harmful invasive alien species both in the EU and nationally, so their status as game animals has been removed. This has changed the nature of the equipment used to hunt them. Section 33 of the Hunting Act prohibits sighting devices intended for night shooting that electronically magnify or alter the image. Exemptions have been granted for hunting white-tailed deer and wild boar, among others. So check the current exemptions before you use a night vision scope for hunting.
When using a night vision scope it is extremely important to remember the principles of safe use. The quarry has to be identified with one hundred per cent certainty and the background sector has to be absolutely safe. All the basic rules of safe firearm handling must be kept in mind as well. It is a good idea to let the residents of the hunting area know about the new technology in use.
