A light-gathering riflescope is ideal for the stand hunt

When you hunt in low light, the riflescope is the most important feature of the gun. With a quality, light-gathering riflescope you can see well enough to shoot at dusk and almost in the dark. On a stand hunt, and especially at twilight, a good pair of binoculars is all but essential. Binoculars are quick to bring up and in low light you see better with them than with the naked eye or with the riflescope alone. Constantly peering through a riflescope also strains the eyes in a different way than using binoculars does.

The markings on a riflescope are made up of its magnification range and the diameter of the objective lens. For example, the marking 3-12x56 means that the magnification of that riflescope is steplessly adjustable between 3 and 12. In this riflescope, 3x magnification gives the widest field of view and 12x is the highest magnification available.

In the example, the objective lens is 56 millimetres in diameter, which directly affects the light-gathering ability of the riflescope. The larger the lens diameter, the more surface area the objective has and the more light it gathers in low-light conditions.
