High-performance bismuth offers performance comparable to lead, but without the harmful environmental impact. Bismuth has a significantly higher density than steel shot, giving it better performance than steel.

The Bornaghi Libra Bismuth cartridge can be fired in older shotguns chambered for 12/70, including shotguns without the fleur-de-lis proof mark. Bismuth is a softer material than, for example, steel or tungsten. The shotgun does not need to be steel-shot proofed.
